Hey Readers! I hope you’re having an amazing Saturday! I wanted to take some time to share some amazing news from Dannon and take you a step further into Dannon’s latest pledge and what it means for you as a consumer.
Dannon is not new to the yogurt and dairy game having been making delicious eats for 74 years (that’s right since 1942!) over the years, they’ve gotten a lot of feedback from their customers and they’ve listened. In recent years, they had a lot of requests for non-GMO options. IF you’re not familiar with GMO, it stands for Genetically Modified Organisms. You can read more here, on wikipedia. There are numerous studies on why GMO is bad for animals, the planet and the most important organism around- YOU. That is why Dannon has come up with the Dannon Pledge.
Dannon has pledged to remove GMO from their top selling products (like Oikos, Dannon and Danimals which make up 50% of their sales) and offer for clear labeling for products that may still contain GMO by the end of 2017.
This is not an easy task. GMO is often in feed for livestock such as cows. Getting non-GMO milk can be costly and hard to come by for a company producing as much dariy as Dannon. That is why they are going right to the source by working closely with feed suppliers and farmers to begin growing non-GMO feed right away. That way, Dannon can use milk from cows fed a strictly non-GMO diet in tasty treats like Dannon, Oikos and Danimals! Dannon is the first national yogurt company to do so and I believe they are truly paving the way:
“We believe the currently-approved GMO’s are safe. However, we believe there is growing consumer preference for non-GMO ingredients in the US and we want to use the strong relationships we have with our farmer partners to move faster to provide products that address this consumer demand.”
After years of debates, congress finally passed a GMO Labeling bill earlier this month. There is still a lot of hubbub about the bill and what it will mean for both companies and consumers. Dannon has made it clear in their pledge that they’re offering complete transparency to their consumers no matter what bills are passed. By December 2017, their labeling will fully disclose any GMO ingredients in any of their products and product lines. It all comes down to offering healthier options and making the decision on what you eat easier!
The best part is that this pledge is well under way! Dannon isn’t just talking about this, they’re digging their heels in and getting things done. They work closely with the farms that product their milk and are implementing strong animal welfare practices through the Validus Certification System. Currently, over 90% of their direct milk supply comes from farms that are Validus Certified. This is just an extra step Dannon is taking towards healthier animals, a better planet and meeting the needs and requests of it’s customers. More than anything, Dannon wants you to #KnowYourYogurt
I look forward to enjoying Dannon yogurt personally.
